1989 · Run and Gun · Arcade
Midnight Resistance (1989) is Data East's Contra-like run and gun, aimed in eight directions with a rotating joystick, in which brothers fight to rescue their family from King Crimson.
Up to two players fight through nine stages. Keys collected along the way unlock weapons and power-ups in a storeroom between stages. The rotating joystick was borrowed from Ikari Warriors.
Data East released it in arcades in 1989 and on the Mega Drive in 1991. Special FX made home computer versions for Ocean, and the Spectrum one scored 93% in Crash.
