Overview

Live A Live (1994) is Square's Super Famicom role-playing game told in seven chapters across different eras, each lead designed by a different manga artist.

Deep Dive

Seven main scenarios run from prehistory to the distant future. Finishing them opens a Middle Ages chapter and then a final chapter that ties all the stories together.

Developer Story

Takashi Tokita directed it, his first time directing, at Square's Development Division 5. It came out in September 1994 but sold only about 270,000 copies and was seen as a commercial failure; critics praised its storytelling but found it short.

Did You Know?

  • It stayed in Japan until an HD-2D remake reached the Switch worldwide in 2022.
  • It was Yoko Shimomura's first major score after joining Square.
