1995 · Platform · 3DO
Gex (1995) is Crystal Dynamics' 3DO platformer starring a wisecracking, television-obsessed gecko trapped in the Media Dimension, which sold about 750,000 copies on the 3DO.
Gex, a gecko who has watched far too much television, is pulled into the Media Dimension by Rez, who wants him as his network's mascot. The 24 levels are spread across five worlds themed on TV channels, each ending in a boss, with hidden remotes opening extra levels. Gex whips enemies with his tail, bounces on it, and uses the suction pads on his feet to climb walls and ceilings. Comedian Dana Gould voiced Gex and wrote his many one-liners.
Development took about 21 months, missing an original June 1994 deadline. The game reached the 3DO in North America on 7 April 1995, followed by PlayStation and Saturn versions that December and a Windows version in 1996. The 3D sequels Enter the Gecko (1998) and Deep Cover Gecko (1999) followed.
