Overview

Dynamite Headdy (1994) is Treasure's Mega Drive platform game starring a puppet who fights by throwing his own head, which can be swapped for 17 different powered-up heads.

Deep Dive

Headdy, a puppet, tries to stop the evil puppet king Dark Demon from turning the world's puppets into his minions. He attacks by throwing his detachable head, which can also grab hooks to pull him up to higher platforms. Seventeen power-up heads change his attacks and abilities, and falling into a pit does not kill him outright: he bounces back out and loses some health.

Developer Story

Development began in August 1993, after Gunstar Heroes, with Koichi Kimura leading. Sega released it in Japan on 5 August 1994 and North America that September. Critics praised its creativity, visuals and technical achievement.

Did You Know?

  • Sega of America asked for a harder North American version, about twice as difficult, and much of the dialogue was removed.
  • A Master System version, based on the Game Gear port, was released only in Brazil.
