Overview

Crazy Climber (1980) is Nichibutsu's skyscraper-climbing arcade game, played with two joysticks at once — one for each of the climber's arms.

Deep Dive

In Crazy Climber the player scales the face of a skyscraper, working each arm with its own joystick to haul the climber up from window to window. Residents slam windows shut and drop flowerpots and other objects on the way up, so their patterns must be learned. The two-handed control scheme was one of the most physically unusual of its era and anticipated the twin-stick layout of Robotron: 2084. The game was a major hit in Japan.

Developer Story

Crazy Climber was developed by Nichibutsu in 1980. Players used two joysticks simultaneously — one for each hand — to climb a building, dodging obstacles thrown from windows. The dual-joystick control scheme was unusual and required players to think about both hands independently, creating a unique physical challenge. The game was a major hit in Japan and had moderate success in North America.
