Carmageddon

1997 · Action / Racing · PC

Overview

Carmageddon (1997) is Stainless Games' racing game in which wrecking every rival or running down every pedestrian wins as well as finishing first — and was censored or banned in several countries.

Deep Dive

Across 36 tracks in 11 locations, a race can be won by finishing the course, wrecking all the other cars or killing all the pedestrians. Time bonuses come from pickups, damaging rivals and running people over.

Developer Story

Stainless began it as a prototype called 3D Destruction Derby, and added pedestrian kills to set it apart and to court controversy. It came out in June 1997, and reviews were generally positive, with GameSpot giving it 8.8/10.

Did You Know?

  • In Germany and briefly the UK, pedestrians became green-blooded zombies or robots; the BBFC later passed the original after a ten-month appeal.
  • SCi tried for the Mad Max licence before securing Death Race 2000.
