Overview

Sonic CD (1993) is the Sega CD's best-selling game, in which Sonic travels between the past, present and future of each stage, and the debut of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic.

Deep Dive

Sonic can travel back and forward in time within each stage, and turning stages into "good futures" — or collecting all seven Time Stones — leads to the best ending. Amy Rose and Metal Sonic made their first appearances here.

Developer Story

Naoto Ohshima directed it. It came out in Japan in September 1993 and sold over 1.5 million copies. Christian Whitehead's 2011 remake brought it to modern platforms, and it was later included in Sonic Origins.

Did You Know?

  • Sega of America delayed the North American release two months to replace the house- and techno-influenced Japanese score with a new one by Spencer Nilsen and others.
  • Electronic Gaming Monthly named it the best Sega CD game of 1993.
