1993 · City Building / Simulation · Macintosh / PC
SimCity 2000 (1993) is Maxis's sequel to SimCity, designed by Will Wright and Fred Haslam, which moved the city into a near-isometric view with hills, underground pipes and subways.
Land now has height, and a separate underground view holds water pipes, subways and road tunnels. New buildings include schools, hospitals, prisons, libraries, museums and futuristic arcologies, with nine kinds of power plant. Players set separate taxes for each zone type, pass city ordinances and read pre-written newspaper articles.
Haslam was asked to make the sequel in December 1990, and Wright joined when Haslam struggled with the isometric style. Wright contributed arcologies, the underground view and small-scale simulations; Haslam contributed the newspaper, free-size zoning and bonds. It sold about 4.23 million copies and was ported to the Saturn, SNES, PlayStation and N64.
