Secret of Evermore

1995 · Action RPG · SNES

Overview

Secret of Evermore (1995) is the only Square game made by North American designers, an action RPG starring a boy and his shape-shifting dog, never released in Japan.

Deep Dive

The player switches between the boy and his dog in real-time battles. Spells come from alchemy, which combines pairs of ingredients, and the dog can sniff out hidden ones.

Developer Story

Alan Weiss and George Sinfield designed it at Square USA, and it came out in North America in October 1995. Critics praised its graphics and alchemy but found the battles awkward and the story less memorable than Square's Japanese RPGs.

Did You Know?

  • It was Jeremy Soule's first video game score.
  • A Japanese release was planned but cancelled.
