Overview

Penguin Adventure (1986) is Konami's MSX sequel to Antarctic Adventure, sending the penguin Penta on a race for a golden apple to save a dying princess.

Deep Dive

Penguette, the Penguin Princess, is ill, and only a golden apple can cure her, so Penta sets off to fetch it. It builds on Antarctic Adventure's racing with many more stages — forest, ice, water and caves, with bonus levels in outer space — along with bosses, minigames and a shop where fishermen trade items, including a gun, for the fish Penta collects. The game has more than one ending: in the bad ending the princess dies, and the good ending is hidden behind a secret.

Developer Story

Directed by Ryouhei Shogaki and Hiroyuki Fukui, Penguin Adventure was released for the MSX in Japan on 28 October 1986 and in Europe in 1987. It was later re-released on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console in Japan.

Did You Know?

  • Hideo Kojima contributed planning ideas for about a month, including the shop's slot machine and some boss tactics, but is not credited; his directorial debut was Metal Gear the following year.
  • The good ending is reached by pausing the game a particular number of times.
