Overview

Gradius (1985) is Konami's side-scrolling shooter built around a power-up meter: collect capsules and choose your upgrade — speed, missiles, lasers or Options.

Deep Dive

The Vic Viper flies through volcanoes, stone heads and alien cells, ending each stage against a battleship boss. Its innovation is the power meter: each capsule collected moves a cursor along a bar of upgrades, and the player decides when to cash it in — speed-up, missiles, double shot, laser, the glowing Option pods that copy the ship's fire, or a shield. That choice made building a loadout part of the play and launched one of Konami's most enduring series.

Developer Story

Gradius was designed by Hiroyasu Machiguchi at Konami in 1985. The game's power-up system was its central innovation: players collected power capsules and applied them to a selection bar to choose which upgrade to apply — speed, missiles, double shot, laser, or option pods. The system required strategic planning before play even began. Gradius established Konami's most enduring shooting game series.

Did You Know?

  • The Gradius power-up selection bar was a completely new mechanic — players chose which upgrade to apply from a menu, making loadout strategy part of the game.
  • The 'Konami Code' was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto while converting Gradius to the NES — he found the game too hard to test and added a secret input that granted full power-ups.
  • Option pods — orbiting weapons that mirrored the player's fire — were a visual innovation that became a series trademark.
  • Big Core, the armoured battleship that guards the stages, became one of the most recognisable bosses in shooting games.
