Gimmick!

1992 · Platform · NES / Famicom

Overview

Gimmick! (1992) is Sunsoft's late Famicom platformer, in which the little green Yumetaro rides his own bouncing star, released only in Japan and Scandinavia.

Deep Dive

Yumetaro chases a girl who has been taken to another dimension by her toys. His star attack defeats enemies and can be ridden like a platform to reach places he could not otherwise get to. Six stages each end with a boss, and finding every hidden item without continuing opens a secret stage.

Developer Story

Tomomi Sakai directed, designed and programmed it, with music by Masashi Kageyama. It came out in Japan in January 1992 and in Scandinavia in 1993 as Mr. Gimmick, in small numbers. Critics found it hard at release, and later reviews have been warmer.

Did You Know?

  • The Japanese cartridge used Sunsoft's 5B chip for three extra sound channels.
  • The Japanese original has become a collector's item.
