Castlevania: The Adventure (1989) is the first handheld Castlevania, a four-stage Game Boy game starring Simon's ancestor Christopher Belmont, with no sub-weapons.
Christopher's whip can be upgraded to a chain whip and then a flame whip, but enemy hits knock it back down. Hearts restore health rather than powering sub-weapons, which this game lacks.
Konami released it in Japan in October 1989. Contemporary reviews praised its graphics for a Game Boy game, but later critics were harsher about its slow pace; Nintendo Life gave it 3/10.
