Franchise · 1991–present
The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise reached 150 million units sold by 2011 — a figure that established it as the best-selling third-party franchise of the Genesis era and one of the most commercially durable game properties in history.
Sonic the Hedgehog launched in June 1991 as the Genesis system seller, designed specifically to give Sega a mascot character capable of challenging Mario. The original trilogy — Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles — sold a combined total of over 25 million copies on the Genesis alone, with Sonic 2 (6 million) being the best-selling Genesis title. The franchise survived the transition from Sega hardware to multiplatform publishing after the Dreamcast's discontinuation in 2001, continuing to sell across PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms. The 150 million figure reported by Sega in 2011 includes mainline games, spin-offs, compilation releases, and mobile titles. The franchise has continued to grow: Sonic Mania (2017) and Sonic Frontiers (2022) extended sales to an estimated 200 million by the mid-2020s.
