Amiga Format

United Kingdom · 1989–2000

Future Publishing's monthly Amiga magazine, which sold more than 160,000 copies an issue at its peak and ran 136 issues, each with a cover disk.

Future Publishing created Amiga Format in July 1989 by splitting its ST/Amiga Format into two titles, and the first issue appeared in August 1989. The magazine covered the whole of the Amiga — games, creative software and programming — and every issue came with a cover disk of software, public-domain games and demos. Some cover disks gave away complete programs: the July 1991 issue carried full versions of Archipelagos and Vaxine and the word processor Wordworth, and a 1993 disk included a version of Blitz BASIC. Its circulation peaked at an average of 161,256 copies an issue in the first half of 1992, and Future launched the spin-offs Amiga Shopper and Amiga Power in 1991. The magazine also played a small part in game history: Total Wormage, entered in a reader competition, was passed to Team17 and released as Worms. The 136th and final issue was published in May 2000.
