Overview

Uniracers (1994) is DMA Design's Super NES racing game for riderless unicycles, in which stunts mid-race give a burst of speed.

Deep Dive

Players race riderless unicycles around 2D tracks. Stunts speed the unicycle up on race tracks and score points on stunt tracks, while wiping out loses all the speed built up. There are nine tours of five tracks, ending in a race against the Anti-Uni, whose collisions reverse the controls and turn the track invisible. Two players can race split-screen, and a league mode takes up to eight.

Developer Story

DMA Design developed the game under the working title "1x1", and Nintendo released it in North America on 5 December 1994. Nintendo Power ranked it the eighth best Super NES game of 1994.

Did You Know?

  • Mike Dailly says Pixar sued over the unicycle's resemblance to Red's Dream, limiting it to an initial run of 300,000; no record of such a lawsuit has been found.
  • The developers practised riding real unicycles in their offices.
  • In Europe it was called Unirally.
