Overview

Tron (1982) is Midway's arcade tie-in to the Disney film, four sub-games in one — including the light cycles that inspired countless snake games.

Deep Dive

Tron gathers four short games, each drawn from the film: light cycle duels in which trails become walls, a tank battle, a fight against grid bugs, and a run at the I/O Tower through a shield of spinning blocks. Players choose the order and must clear all four to advance. Built to launch alongside Disney's 1982 film, it was one of the first major movie tie-in arcade games and one of the best-selling cabinets of its year.

Developer Story

Tron was developed by Midway in 1982 to tie in with Disney's film of the same name. The game was designed by Bill Adams and comprised four sub-games: a light cycle race, a tank battle, a grid bug shooter, and an I/O Tower level. It was one of the first major licensed games and one of the first to use speech synthesis matched to a film property. Tron became one of the best-selling arcade games of 1982.
