Tobal No. 1

1996 · Fighting · PlayStation

Overview

Tobal No. 1 (1996) is DreamFactory's 60-frames-per-second fighting game for Square, with characters by Akira Toriyama and a dungeon-crawling Quest Mode — and a demo of Final Fantasy VII in every box.

Deep Dive

The game runs at up to 60 frames per second, and Akira Toriyama designed all of its characters. Alongside the fighting modes, its Quest Mode mixes fighting with 3D dungeon exploration, though progress there cannot be saved. Clearing the 30-floor Udan's Dungeon unlocks the secret fighter Toriyama Robo.

Developer Story

Seiichi Ishii helped design its mechanics at DreamFactory, and Square released it in Japan on 2 August 1996, with Sony distributing it abroad. Tobal 2 followed in 1997 but stayed in Japan.
