Overview

Flicky (1984) is Sega's arcade game about a flightless blue bird leading yellow Chirps to the exit while cats and lizards try to scatter them.

Deep Dive

Flicky must lead the Chirps to an exit while cat and lizard enemies try to scatter them. Throwable items defeat enemies, and bonus rounds involve catching falling Chirps in a net. After 48 stages the game loops at higher difficulty.

Developer Story

Yoji Ishii designed it over about a year, with art by Yoshiki Kawasaki. Bally Midway released it in the US, and versions followed for the SG-1000, Japanese home computers and, in 1991, the Mega Drive.

Did You Know?

  • It began as a maze game inspired by Namco's Mappy and was called "Busty", then "Flippy".
  • Flicky became a Sega mascot and appears in Sonic games, notably Sonic 3D Blast.
