Overview

Bushido Blade (1997) is Lightweight's sword-fighting game with no health bar or time limit, in which most hits are fatal.

Deep Dive

Fights are one-on-one with swords and other weapons, with no health bar and no time limit, and most hits are fatal. The Body Damage System means a lesser wound can slow, disarm or cripple an opponent instead. There are eight weapons, six characters and three stances: high, neutral and low. In story mode dishonourable tactics can end the playthrough early, and Slash mode pits the player against 100 enemies in a row.

Developer Story

Lightweight developed it, Square published it in Japan on 14 March 1997, and Sony released it in North America in October. It sold 387,937 copies in Japan in 1997, and Bushido Blade 2 followed a year later.

Did You Know?

  • Its director wanted to capture the tension of a fight that could end with a single blow.
  • Some critics found the one-hit kills polarising.
