Tetsuya Mizuguchi

Japan · Born 1965 · Sega, Q Entertainment, Enhance · Producer, Game Designer

He produced Sega Rally Championship, then spent his career turning music into game design — Space Channel 5, Rez, Lumines and Tetris Effect.

Tetsuya Mizuguchi was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, on 22 May 1965 and joined Sega in 1990, where he started out designing arcade cabinets and an interactive ride called Megalopolis. He then produced Sega Rally Championship (1995), an arcade racer whose handling on mixed surfaces proved influential on later racing games. His direction changed after a visit to a music festival in Zürich, where he watched how people moved in response to music and connected it to synesthesia — the blending of the senses. That idea shaped Space Channel 5 (1999), a rhythm game built around a dancing television reporter, and Rez (2001), a rail shooter in which every shot and hit adds to the music and the visuals pulse with it. Rez is now regarded as one of the defining experiments in audiovisual game design. Mizuguchi left Sega in October 2003 during a corporate restructuring and co-founded Q Entertainment, where he made the music-puzzle game Lumines (2004) for the PlayStation Portable. He later founded Enhance, which in 2018 released Tetris Effect, a version of Tetris built around music and light that he had wanted to make for many years.
