Japan · Born 1968 · Composer, Sound Director & Producer
The composer and sound designer of Silent Hill, whose mix of industrial noise, trip-hop and melancholy rock did as much to frighten players as anything on screen.
Akira Yamaoka was born on 6 February 1968 in Niigata. He studied product and interior design at Tokyo Art College, and became a musician while he was there. He joined Konami on 21 September 1993, and his early credits include Contra: Hard Corps and the Sparkster games. His defining work began in 1999 with Silent Hill. Yamaoka joined the project as a composer and soon took responsibility for the game's overall sound design, which meant the music and the ambient noise were conceived together. Silent Hill's audio moves between grinding industrial textures, metallic clangs, radio static that rises as monsters approach, and unexpectedly gentle, melodic pieces. In a game whose fog hid most of the world, sound did much of the work of building dread. Yamaoka continued as composer on the sequels and also took on the role of producer for later entries. He has named Silent Hill 2 as his favourite of his own soundtracks. Yamaoka left Konami on 2 December 2009 and joined Grasshopper Manufacture in February 2010, where he worked on Shadows of the Damned with Goichi Suda and Shinji Mikami. He returned to the series that made his name as sound director and composer on the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2.
