Effect: Fills in the hero's default name, Ness, along with default names for the rest of the party.
EarthBound asks the player to name the whole party, their dog and even their favourite food before the adventure begins. Choosing "Don't Care" fills in defaults, and the hero's default is Ness — a name widely read as a nod to Nintendo's hardware (NES, and an anagram of SNES). Every character could be renamed, but Ness became the character's canonical name, cemented when he appeared as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. in 1999.
