What Changed

The Super Shotgun

The Super Shotgun is a double-barrelled gun with a reload animation — two shells expended, a break-open reload, two new shells. Its damage output at close range is extraordinary; in the hands of a skilled player it becomes the primary clearing tool for most enemy types. The weapon rewards aggressive forward movement: getting close enough to use it effectively requires reading enemy attack patterns and exploiting the brief window before they fire.

id Software's Sandy Petersen, who designed many of Doom II's maps and enemy types, has said in interviews that the Super Shotgun changed how the entire game was designed. Rooms could be smaller, encounters could be more intense, and the weapon created a feedback loop that rewarded mastery rather than distance. It remains one of the most celebrated individual weapon designs in shooter history.
