A Link to the Past Randomiser

Base: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past · SNES · 2014 · Randomiser

Creator: Dessyreqt and community

A randomiser mod for A Link to the Past that shuffles all item locations throughout Hyrule, creating an endlessly replayable item hunt that spawned one of retro gaming's most active competitive communities.

The ALttP Randomiser shuffles every item in the game — pendants, crystals, dungeon items, heart pieces, and all equipment — to random locations throughout both Light World and Dark World, creating a puzzle in which players must locate items sufficient to progress using logic that accounts for all possible orderings. The randomiser generated a dedicated speedrunning and competitive scene almost immediately after release, with weekly races and community tournaments developing rapidly. SpeedGaming and subsequent streaming communities built an entire broadcasting infrastructure around randomiser races, introducing thousands of viewers to ALttP who might never have engaged with a traditional playthrough.

Legacy: The ALttP Randomiser transformed a 30-year-old game into an infinitely replayable competitive format and became the model for the randomiser genre that has since extended to dozens of classic games.
