Final Fantasy IV: Namingway Edition

Base: Final Fantasy IV · SNES · 2010 · Restoration

Creator: Ryusui

A ROM hack of the North American Final Fantasy II (SNES) that restores the Japanese script, reinstates content removed for the US release, adds a naming option for all characters, and corrects the significantly reduced difficulty of the localised version.

The North American localisation of Final Fantasy IV — released as Final Fantasy II in 1991 — removed multiple mechanics, reduced the difficulty substantially, and altered significant portions of the script to pass Nintendo of America's content guidelines. Ryusui's Namingway Edition applied the Japanese script in translation to the US ROM, reinstated removed mechanics including the MP damage system and the original boss AI, restored censored content, and added a naming screen for all characters (the Japanese version allowed this; the US release did not). The hack effectively produced a complete retranslation and restoration from the US engine, making the game play and read substantially closer to the Japanese original.

Legacy: Namingway Edition remains the definitive English version of Final Fantasy IV for players who want the closest experience to the Japanese original, predating the Nintendo DS remake's new translation by several years.
Key Facts:
  • Named for Namingway, an NPC who allows character renaming — a feature restored from the Japanese original
  • Restores the Darkness ability for Cecil, removed from the US release
  • Corrects the significantly lower difficulty of the US localisation to match the Japanese version's challenge
  • The English script is a fresh translation from the Japanese, not the original Square of America localisation
