Debug Mode and Level Select

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 · Sega Genesis · 1992 · Debug Mode

Options screen: hold A, then on controller 2 press Up Up Up Down Down Down Left Right; confirm with Start to access level select; hold A and press Start on a stage for debug mode

Effect: Unlocks a full level select menu and a debug mode for placing objects in any stage.

Sonic 2's combined level select and debug cheat was more elaborate than its predecessor's, requiring input on the second controller's options screen — a deliberate obscurity from the developers. The level select allowed access to the famously unfinished Hidden Palace Zone, which had been cut before release but remained partially present in the ROM. Debug mode again allowed free object placement. The discovery of Hidden Palace Zone through this cheat became a major event in the early Sega fan community and launched years of speculation about what the complete zone would have looked like.

Key Facts:
  • Requires input on the second controller, not the primary gamepad
  • Unlocks the unfinished Hidden Palace Zone cut before the game shipped
  • Hidden Palace Zone became one of the most discussed "lost" game areas of the 16-bit era
