"Ness" Default Name Hint

EarthBound · SNES · 1994 · Hidden Feature

When prompted to enter the player's name at the start of the game, select "My name is Ness!" (in the Japanese version) or allow the default "Ness" to be used

Effect: Sets the player character's name to Ness, which unlocks special dialogue acknowledgments and is required for certain story sequences to reference the name correctly.

EarthBound's naming sequence at the start of the game was itself a layered design: the psychic Buzz Buzz tells the player their destiny, and the default name "Ness" was not accidental — it is an anagram of NES, a nod to Nintendo's hardware legacy. In the Japanese Super Famicom version, selecting the default name triggered a specific line of dialogue acknowledging it. The name became so culturally embedded that when Ness appeared as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. in 1999, most players had no memory of ever having named their own character differently. The "cheat" is less a code than a deliberate designer Easter egg built into the game's opening.
