The Sega Scream

Sega · 1992 · Sega Genesis / Mega Drive

"SEGA!"

The distinctive shouted "SEGA!" audio logo — screamed at the beginning of television advertisements — became one of the most recognisable sonic brand identities in 1990s consumer electronics.

The "Sega Scream" emerged from a 1991–1992 campaign strategy to give Sega a distinctive audio signature that would identify the brand before any visuals appeared on screen. The scream — a multi-voice, distorted shout of "SEGA!" recorded to suggest raw energy — opened television advertisements including the Joe Montana Football spots, the launch advertising for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and the broader "Welcome to the Next Level" campaign. Produced by Foote, Cone & Belding working with Sega of America, the jingle was applied across all Genesis advertising through 1993 and into the 32X and Saturn launch periods. The Joe Montana Football spots were particularly notable for combining the scream with fast cuts of gameplay footage and the athlete's endorsement in a format that became the template for sports game advertising throughout the decade.

Impact: The Sega Scream became the most recognised audio brand identity in the console wars era and demonstrated that a jingle or audio logo could be as effective a brand differentiator as a tagline.
