Yu Suzuki's Out Run was the first major arcade game to use a hydraulic sit-down cabinet, fake road curvature through sprite scaling, and branching course selection. Its Ferrari Testarossa setting and Magical Sound Shower synthesiser music defined the mid-1980s arcade aesthetic.
Out Run innovated in cabinet design (hydraulic motion synchronized to road curves), game structure (branching routes at each fork, multiple endings), and visual spectacle (sprite-scaled curved roads giving the illusion of genuine perspective). The selectable music tracks — three options at the beginning — pioneered in-game music choice.
Out Run was developed by Yu Suzuki at Sega AM2 and released in arcades in 1986. It became one of the most successful arcade games of its era and spawned numerous ports and sequels.
