Castlevania

NES · 1987 · US · Art: Marc Ericksen

One of the strongest pieces of NES box art, the US Castlevania cover depicts Simon Belmont in dramatic confrontation with Dracula in a composition that accurately captures the game's gothic horror tone.

The US Castlevania NES box art, painted by Marc Ericksen, depicts Simon Belmont mid-whip-crack facing Dracula in a stone corridor, with bats and a full moon composing the background. Unlike many NES localisations, the US artwork is widely considered superior to or at minimum equal with the Japanese Famicom Disk System original, which used a more stylised manga-influenced illustration. The painted realism of the US cover — a conscious choice by Konami of America to appeal to older players — established a visual identity for the franchise in Western markets that persisted for years. The image has been reprinted, referenced, and celebrated in retrospectives of gaming art, and the composition of hero-versus-vampire became the template for subsequent Castlevania packaging across multiple platforms.
