Stunt Race FX

1994 · Racing · SNES

Overview

Stunt Race FX used the Super FX chip to render a fully polygonal racing game on SNES hardware — the first 3D racing game on a home console.

Deep Dive

Following Star Fox's success with the Super FX chip, Nintendo EAD and Argonaut Software applied the same co-processor to a racing game. Stunt Race FX rendered a moving 3D perspective from behind a vehicle — the template for every subsequent 3D racer.

Developer Story

Stunt Race FX was developed by Nintendo EAD in collaboration with Argonaut Software and published by Nintendo in 1994.

Did You Know?

  • Stunt Race FX proved that the Super FX chip's polygon rendering could support more than space shooters.
  • The game's cars moved with animated springs visible on their suspensions — an unnecessary but charming visual detail.
