Star Fox 64

1997 · Rail Shooter · Nintendo 64

Overview

Star Fox 64 fully realised the rail shooter concept that the SNES Star Fox had introduced. Full voice acting across the entire cast, a branching mission system with multiple routes, and All-Range Mode — free-movement dogfighting — expanded the formula. The game shipped bundled with the Rumble Pak, giving the N64 controller its first vibration feedback.

Deep Dive

Star Fox 64 was the first game to ship bundled with the Rumble Pak, Nintendo's vibration feedback peripheral. The branching mission structure — taking different routes through the Lylat System based on in-mission success conditions — gave the game substantial replay value. All-Range Mode, available in certain missions, removed the rail and allowed free flight in three dimensions.

Developer Story

Star Fox 64 was developed by Nintendo EAD as a full realisation of the Star Fox concept on N64 hardware, after a cancelled project called Star Fox 2 on SNES. The game launched in Japan in April 1997 and was Nintendo's summer release title.

Did You Know?

  • Star Fox 64 was the first game to ship bundled with the Rumble Pak — introducing console controller vibration to a mainstream audience before it became a standard feature.
  • Slippy Toad's voice was a deliberate design choice to produce an emotional reaction that reinforced his role as the team member most frequently in trouble.
  • Star Fox 64's branching mission paths can lead to significantly different final boss sequences — the 'true' final boss is accessible only through the game's hardest route.
  • The game's medal system — earning medals by reaching kill quotas in each mission — unlocked a multiplayer-only ship and extended the game's competitive value.
