LucasArts

USA · Founded 1982 · Developer / Publisher

LucasArts produced the finest point-and-click adventure games ever made — Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango — before abandoning the genre and eventually closing in 2013.

Lucasfilm Games was founded in 1982 as the games division of George Lucas's entertainment company, initially exploring experimental interactive experiences before finding its identity with adventure games. Ron Gilbert's SCUMM engine (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion), developed for Maniac Mansion (1987), became the foundation for LucasArts' entire adventure game catalogue through the 1990s. The company's philosophy — never letting the player reach a dead end or lose progress permanently — distinguished its games from Sierra's more punishing approach. The Secret of Monkey Island (1990), designed by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, and Dave Grossman, perfected the formula with a comedic tone, challenging puzzles, and memorable characters. LucasArts' golden era produced Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango before the company shifted focus to Star Wars action games in the late 1990s. Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 and LucasArts' subsequent closure in April 2013 ended one of gaming's most celebrated studios.
