Super Mario Land

1989 · Platform · Game Boy

Overview

Super Mario Land was a Game Boy launch title that adapted the Mario formula for a monochrome handheld screen. The game took Mario through four worlds inspired by real-world locations — Egypt, China, Easter Island, and ancient Greece — and replaced familiar Koopa enemies with different characters. It sold over 18 million copies.

Deep Dive

Super Mario Land was developed by Nintendo R&D1, Gunpei Yokoi's division, rather than Miyamoto's EAD team. The game was designed to be playable on the Game Boy's small, monochrome, low-contrast screen: character designs were simplified, levels were shorter, and the background was sparse to maintain visual clarity. The game introduced Princess Daisy as the rescue target rather than Peach.

Developer Story

Super Mario Land was developed by Nintendo R&D1 under producer Gunpei Yokoi and director Satoru Okada. The game was designed specifically for the Game Boy's screen limitations and launched alongside the hardware in April 1989 in Japan.
