Galaxian

1979 · Fixed Shooter · Arcade

Overview

Galaxian is Namco's 1979 answer to Space Invaders, advancing the fixed-shooter genre with colorful RGB graphics, individually animated aliens, and diving attack formations that broke from the rigid marching rows of its predecessor. Instead of all aliens moving in lockstep, Galaxian's enemies peeled away from the main formation to swoop down at the player in kamikaze-style attacks, making each wave more dynamic and unpredictable. It was the first arcade game to use true RGB color sprites on a raster display, setting a new standard for arcade visuals. Galaxian was a major commercial success and directly led to its legendary sequel Galaga in 1981.

Deep Dive

Galaxian was created by Namco's team under Kazunori Sawano as a deliberate evolution of Space Invaders. The game's technical innovation lay in its use of multiple hardware sprites with individual color palettes — a major feat for 1979. Each alien type had its own diving behavior: flagships flew predictable arcs, escorts broke away to support attack runs, and standard drones made straight kamikaze dives. The game's difficulty came from managing the threat of diving groups while maintaining fire on the main formation. Namco sold over 40,000 arcade units in North America alone. The follow-up Galaga in 1981 added even more sophisticated enemy behavior, a capture mechanic, and a dual-ship mode, becoming one of the best-selling arcade games of the early 1980s.
